The Home of Metal project is to hold a fourth and final Open Day at The Public on Saturday 26 March, offering one last chance for fans of all ages to share their memorabilia and stories with the digital archive and help to tell the true story of the birthplace of Heavy Metal.
For too long the Black Country and Birmingham have failed to celebrate what is rightfully theirs, to claim the city and the region as home of Heavy Metal.
“Heavy metal was born in the West Midlands and has developed a global following matched only in hip-hop. It’s time to stop sneering and celebrate this proud cultural heritage.” Daniel Trilling, New Statesman
Home of Metal celebrates the music that was created in the West Midlands, its legacy and influence across the world and how the social history of the region was a fundamental ingredient in providing the backdrop against which Heavy Metal was created, defined and reshaped over the past decades.
Home of Metal Open Days are aiming to create the first digital archive of Heavy Metal music, memorabilia and fans’ stories and to tell the story of this unique moment of Midlands’ musical heritage.
Fans of all ages are encouraged to bring along their memorabilia, photos and stories to be recorded for the Home Of Metal digital archive. Home of Metal is looking for everything from concert tickets to photographs, badges, album covers, t-shirts and flyers relating to bands such as Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, Judas Priest, Diamond Head, Magnum and Napalm Death.
Activities taking place throughout the day include Kerrang! Radio DJ Johnny Doom talking to former ‘Raw Power’ presenter, Ozzfest compere and all round Metal expert Krusher, rockin' fun family activities with artist duo Juneau Projects and a masterclass in photography with rock photographer Steve Gerrard covering:
- Music and photography, a brief history
- The easy way to becoming a music photographer
- Passes and how to get them
- Professionalism & Etiquette
- The business of music photography
- Shooting Offstage
- Lighting – How Steve uses natural light, off camera flash and simple, portable lighting set-ups.
The masterclass is limited to 15 places - to guarantee a spot on the day, call The Public on 0121 533 7161.
Home of Metal gratefully acknowledge the support of Black Country Arts Partnership.
The Home of Metal Open Day at The Public is part of Arts Nation West Midlands.
