The Queen and Ben Elton musical We Will Rock You has been crowned the UK’s favourite show.

At Sunday night’s Olivier awards, British theatre’s answer to the Oscars, the long-running musical received the prestigious BBC Radio 2 Audience Award, the only category decided entirely by members of the public who have been voting via the awards website.

The musical came out top in the category which saw more than 43,000 votes cast, beating a shortlist including Billy Elliot, Jersey Boys and Les Miserables.

The guitar-thrashing, leather clad musical which is based on over two dozen Queen songs with a script and direction by Ben Elton, has been one of the West End’s biggest attractions since it opened at London’s Dominion Theatre almost nine years ago. Over the last two years it has drawn the largest Christmas week audiences across the whole of the West End and has become the longest running show ever to play at The Dominion.

A further production of the show is now in its second record-breaking year and makes a return visit to Birmingham Hippodrome from Tuesday 5 July – Saturday 6 August 2011 starring Coronation Street star Ian Reddington, Hear’Say’s Noel Sullivan and X Factor’s Rhydian.

Accepting the award Queen guitarist Brian May said: “Thank you to the tremendous talent that has come through our door and kept us rocking throughout the years.”

To date, We Will Rock You has been seen by more than five million people in the UK and by over 12 million worldwide. The London production is currently booking through to July 2011, with the producers announcing this week that from March 28 the booking period is to be extended to October 22.
