Hospice Issues Last Minute Call for Starlight Strollers

A last minute appeal has gone out to women across Birmingham and Sandwell to walk among the stars for their local hospice next month.

Birmingham St Mary’s Hospice is calling on ladies and girls aged 12 and above to sign up for the Selly Park-based charity’s Starlight Stroll on Saturday, July 2.

So far more than 360 people have registered for the annual event, which last year raised in excess of £50,000. The money has funded care for people with life-limiting illnesses and support for their relatives.

Hospice Head of Fundraising and Marketing Caroline Taylor said: “In 2010 we had 425 women walking in aid of the Hospice and we’re coming very close to matching that figure again. I’d like to appeal to all women who read this to sign up with friends and relatives to help us beat last year’s total.

“So come on girls, grab your mum, sister, aunt, grandma, niece, partner or best friends and join us for Birmingham St Mary’s Hospice’s 2011 Starlight Stroll.”

Registration, originally due to close on June 17, has been extended until Friday, July 1, due to ongoing late entries and phone enquiries about the event.

For further information about Starlight Stroll please telephone Aysha Nessa on 0121 472 1191 or email aysha.nessa@bsmh.org.uk.  Alternatively, to sign up online go to www.bsmh.org.uk/starlightstroll.

Each year, Birmingham St Mary’s Hospice cares for around 1,000 people with illnesses such as cancer, MS, motor neurone disease and Aids.

Many of its patients are cared for in their own homes, however, the Hospice also boasts an Inpatient Unit to provide specialised respite care and symptom management for people with advanced conditions.

Birmingham St Mary’s also has a Day Hospice, which patients visit once a week for medical support, a range of therapies and friendship. This service also gives carers some much-needed time off.

Additionally the Hospice’s Family and Carer Support Team is their for bereaved relatives no matter how young or old for as long as they need.
