LADY SINGS THE BLUES – the definitive tribute to Billie Holiday featuring

VAL WISEMAN (pictured)

Birmingham Botanical Gardens are the stunning setting for LADY SINGS THE BLUES, the critically acclaimed celebration of the music of Billie Holiday featuring seven of the UK’s finest jazz musicians and a remarkable singer, VAL WISEMAN, current winner of the British Jazz Awards Best Vocalists title.

The bandleader is trumpet ace DIGBY FAIRWEATHER, with ALAN BARNES (tenor sax & clarinet); ROY WILLIAMS (trombone); BRIAN DEE (piano); PAT McCARTHY (guitar); LEN SKEAT (double bass) and BOBBY WORTH (drums) – all of whom have amassed a staggering 37 British Jazz Awards between them!

This tribute concert, part of the Birmingham International Jazz & Blues Festival, recreates the recording career of Billie Holiday through the 30s, 40s and 50s. Billie was a leading 1950s icon, alongside James Dean and Marilyn Monroe, but somehow her songs retain a currency, a contemporary popularity evidenced by their constant usage on film soundtracks, TV commercials, mainstream radio and the repertoire of some of the world’s most successful singers.

Tickets £15 adults and £10 concessions
