IT is not every day that you find a play about a play with a mad Martian, a nutty professor and a robot on valium.
But if you head down to the Co operative Theatre in Wyken between Monday 27th June and Saturday 2nd July, that is what you will find.
The Wheatsheaf Players latest production is the hilarious and long-titled They Came From Mars And Landed Outside The Farndale Avenue Church Hall In Time For The Townswomen’s Guild’s Coffee Morning.
Written in 1987 by David McGillivray and Walter Zerlin Junior, the play is one out of a series of 10 that spoofs local amateur dramatic productions.
The Farndale Ave ladies will have audiences laughing as they attempt to blast off with their dramatic society’s production of this sci-fi thriller.
As the plot unfolds we find Professor Einstein played by the ever resourceful Mrs Reece from the Townswomen’s Guild, trying to foil a Martian kidnapping of his just completed “Super Townswoman Robot, Roberta”. You will witness the first earth contact with an extraterrestrial life form!
Robots, Martians, useless props, a big production number that goes wrong, hysterical acting, silly sound effects, extraordinary lighting a cluttered set, high tech effects going awry and the limited talents of some group members ensure that the cast end up landing in their own intergalactic mess and It is up to the resourceful Mrs Reece to try and steer the cast into orbit, where the nail-biting action is interrupted to present the flower arranging competition!
You will never forget this encounter with this most inept group of players in the history of the modern theatre as they attempt to thwart this invasion from Mars.
This show guarantees a great night out with lots of laughs and fun, so don't miss this fabulous comedy.
