International artist celebrates DanceXchange’s tenth anniversary

International choreographer Hofesh Shechter will be among a special line-up of artists helping to celebrate DanceXchange’s (dx) tenth anniversary based at Birmingham Hippodrome.

Winner of the Critic’s Circle National Dance Award for Best Choreography (modern) in 2008, Hofesh Shechter is one of the UK’s most exciting artists. With support from dx, Hofesh will be restaging his highly acclaimed works Uprising and The Art of Not Looking Back as a double bill for the first time as part of dx’s special tenth anniversary season.

In Uprising seven men emerge from the shadows to bombard the stage with furious energy, bonding and sparring, making up and falling out. This highly charged work, set to a throbbing percussive score also composed by Shechter himself, leaves audiences buzzing.

Inspired by, and made for, the world-class female dancers of the Hofesh Shechter Theatre Company, The Art of Not Looking Back has not been performed in the UK since its premiere in Brighton in 2009.

David Massingham, Artistic Director of DanceXchange (dx), comments: “Hofesh is one of the most inventive choreographic voices in the dance world. I’m excited to welcome him back to dx, and pleased we can present this double bill of two great works for the first time. Over the last ten years, dx has supported the production of some of the world’s most successful dance works, and our long history of work with Hofesh, including his collaboration on ‘Watch This Space’ for International Dance Festival Birmingham 2008, is a brilliant example of this”.

Originally established in 1993, DanceXchange (dx) is a powerhouse of dance responsible for helping take British dance to a worldwide stage. 2011 is the tenth anniversary of dx being based at Birmingham Hippodrome, and the move in 2001 saw dx, together with the theatre and Birmingham Royal Ballet become the largest dance partnership in Britain. International artists including TAO Dance Theatre, Frauke Requardt and Aakash Odedra will all be performing as part of a special anniversary season.
