DisabledGo to survey venues in Birmingham

The national organisation DisabledGo are working with Birmingham City Council to carry out an access survey of up to 1000 public venues across the city.

DisabledGo are being funded by Marks and Spencer to carry out the initial survey in 2012 and post the findings on their national website in the form of guides. 800 of these guides will be Key Access Reviews and 200 will be Detailed Access Guides. They will then receive funding support from Birmingham City council to update the entries on the website for a further 5 years.

The access guides will be selected from within the area's boundary. The surveying works to a prescribed way of selecting which venues are selected as KARs and DAGs. The venues will include things like retail outlets, hotels, librarys, tourism venues and leisure centres.

DisabledGo are inviting local disabled people with access auditing experience and skills to apply to become DisabledGo Surveyors on the Birmingham project. The closing date for applications is 20th January 2012.

They are also inviting local people to contribute suggestions for venues to be surveyed.
