Marathon time running out

Time is ticking away if you want to run in this year’s half marathon in Stafford.

The event attracts runners from across Staffordshire and beyond and takes place on Sunday 25 March.

Now runners are being urged to get their entries in fast as registration closes on Friday (20 January.) Although organisers say they will stop taking entries before that date if the 2,500 runner capacity has been reached.

The race will start in the town centre and head off into the surrounding countryside – with two steady climbs - before returning to the Market Square via the award-winning Victoria Park.

You can register online via www.staffordbc.gov.uk/halfmarathon , in person at Stafford Gatehouse Theatre in Eastgate Street or by telephoning 01785 254 653.

The race is now in its 28th year and crowds turn out to line the route and cheer on the diverse field of athletes. Residents, local community groups and school children are all encouraged to get involved and offer support to the runners along the course.

The 2012 Half Marathon will see the return of a medal for each participant who will also receive a technical running t-shirt.

Former half marathon competitor and cabinet member for leisure, Councillor Mike Smith said: “This race has become so popular and rightly heralded as a major event in our county. And there is an extra buzz this year with the London Olympics just around the corner.

“I would hate anyone to miss out because they had forgotten to register or left it too late so I’d urge all runners to get on the web, visit the Gatehouse or give us a ring.”

As part of the Half Marathon event day programme the School and Family Fun Run will fill the town centre with fun and fancy dress and people will be able to register next month – keep up to date at www.staffordbc.gov.uk/funrun.
