Village PO returns to Weston near Stafford

A post office service returns to a village near Stafford next week.

The branch is expected to be up and running from the village hall in Weston from Thursday (1 March.)

It follows campaigning by Weston's Community Shop Group, and Stafford Borough Council’s Post Office working group - which was set up to fight closures and support Royal Mail services in the borough.

The branch was closed early last year but Post Office Limited recently announced the service would return in March.

The new service at Weston Village Hall on Green Road will open Tuesdays and Thursdays between 1pm and 4pm and will provide the same range of services to customers - including a banking and benefits collection.

Bill Perrett, chair of the community group, said: “Our main aim is to provide a service for those without transport in Weston and who find it difficult to travel to Hixon or are dependent on others to take them; and for those from adjoining villages and hamlets. As an interim measure we think this is the way forward until we are in a position to host a full time post office as part of a community shop.”

Mr Perrett also thanked Weston with Gayton Parish Council and Weston Village Hall management committee for facilitating the new service.

Councillor Frances Beatty, cabinet member for planning and regeneration, said: “The community has worked hard to achieve this and it is really good news.

“It is so important to maintain a local postal service in our villages especially for those without transport or where a car journey to the post office can be several miles and costly with increased fuel prices.”

The village hall is around half a mile from the old post office in Old Road, Weston.
