Deadline approaches for Summer Exhibition submissions

The deadline to The Public’s annual Summer Exhibition is just weeks away.

Artists from across Sandwell have until Monday 18 June to submit work to West Bromwich venue’s open exhibition, and have a unique opportunity to display their artwork within the Black Country gallery for free.

The annual exhibition aims to actively encourage creativity within the local community by nurturing talent and providing residents the opportunity to showcase their work to a mass audience. The region is rich in artistic talent and The Public are looking to celebrate this artistic excellence.

In 2011, over 60 local artists with a connection to the region submitted work to be considered for the Summer Exhibition, with close to 100 pieces of artwork selected to be displayed throughout the building during the summer months and on an online gallery.

This year’s Summer Exhibition will have two themes; ‘Portraits’, and 'Places', inspired by The Public’s Art of Motion exhibition launching in May.

Artists are invited to submit up to three pieces of work, in a variety of mediums, including painting, drawing, photography and printmaking. All artwork selected for the exhibition will be displayed from 18 July to 9 September alongside artwork from both upcoming and internationally renowned artists.

To submit work for consideration visit or collect an application form from The Public.

Linda Saunders, Managing Director of The Public said,

“The quality of work submitted to last year’s Summer Exhibition was incredibly high and is a great testament to the creative talent which resides in the region. We’re very much looking forward to celebrating the gifted artists of the Black Country and provide them with the opportunity to showcase their work to others.”

The closing date for submissions is Monday 18 June and applicants will be notified by Friday 29 June. The work will be selected by The Public’s exhibitions team and wider staff, alongside representatives from the local community. The Summer Exhibition runs from Wednesday 18 July to Sunday 9 September, Wednesday to Saturday, 10am to 5pm and Sunday, 11am to 3pm.

Summer Exhibition 2012 forms part of the Sandwell Arts Festival, taking place across the borough from Saturday 11 August to Saturday 25 August.
