Mummy's the word at Worcester Art Gallery & Museum

Spend a little time in ancient Egypt this summer holiday by taking a trip to Worcester Art Gallery & Museum.  Over the six week holiday the Gallery is running themed events and creative workshops for children to enjoy, all based around the blockbuster exhibition Secret Egypt.

Saturday 27th July is Secret Egypt day – a free family drop-in day from 11am to 4pm where children and adults can discover the Art Gallery and Museum's own Egyptian treasures and explore objects that are usually wrapped in tissue or locked away in cases. Children can also make their own Egyptian artefacts.

On the afternoon of 27th July the Art Gallery & Museum is showing the film 'Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark'. Where better to enjoy this classic family film than the museum? Tickets are £4.50 each or just £15 for a family ticket. To book call 01905 25371.

Two fabulous ancient Egypt themed children's workshops take place throughout the summer; children can create an Egyptian cartouche or write a secret message in hieroglyphics on Wednesday 31st July. On Tuesday 6th August they can make opulent adorned collars and discover the symbolic significance of scarab beetles, good luck charms and colour in Ancient Egypt. All workshops are 10.30am-12.30pm, cost £4.50 per child and places can be booked by calling 01905 25371.

Finally, on Saturday 17th August there's a Free Family drop-in day focussing on Egyptian mummies. Our own mummy, Namenkhetamun has been getting a little lonely, so from 11am-4pm you can join dragon-maker Kate Brookes to decorate and bejewel a giant Egyptian sarcophagus and make mini mummies to rest inside the coffin. Children can also create a Scraptastic headdress so they can take a little bit of ancient Egypt home with them.

Angie Bishop, Manager of Worcester Art Gallery & Museum, says: "It's positively Egyptastic at the Art Gallery & Museum this summer. We hope lots of families will take the opportunity to visit Secret Egypt and to take part in our events and activities. 'Raiders of the Lost Ark' is my particular favourite, so I’ll be ready with my popcorn on 27th July!"

The blockbuster exhibition Secret Egypt- Unravelling truth from myth brings together over 100 objects, including the mummy and coffin of Namenkhetamun, temple stones with hieroglyphs of great Pharaoh Akhenaten and his queen Nefertiti and a mummified sparrow hawk with coffin. It is on at Worcester Art Gallery & Museum until 31st August. The Art Gallery & Museum is open Monday-Saturday, 10.30am-4.30pm, and entry is free.

The exhibition includes interactive elements and there is also a family-friendly trail throughout the Art Gallery & Museum.
