13 June – 5 September 2015
On Saturday 13 June Worcester City Art Gallery & Museum will be opening the doors on the blockbuster exhibition Way of the Warrior, a visually-stunning exhibition of arms and armour from epic historical movies including Gladiator, The Last Samurai and War Horse.
All armour and costumes in the exhibition are highly accurate reconstructions of warrior equipment and weapons spanning the last 2500 years. Visitors can also put themselves in the picture by trying on armour, from a gladiator helmet to a World War II backpack.
Way of the Warrior: Epic Movie Arms and Armour has been touring the UK for 5 years, attracting large audiences wherever it goes. Worcester City Art Gallery & Museum will be the largest display so far staged and will include screen used costumes, arms and armour from; Alexander, Gladiator, Spartacus Vengeance, Centurion, King Arthur, Kingdom of Heaven, The Last Samurai, War Horse, Saving Private Ryan and many more.
The exhibition includes interactive elements and will be supported by plenty of family friendly events on over the summer holidays. Throughout the holidays families can drop in to the Art Gallery & Museum and help decorate our very own war horse Joey.
Art Gallery & Museum Manager Angie Bishop says: "Way of the Warrior is a fantastic exhibition which will thrill film enthusiasts and entertain children and families alike. It's also free entry which means visitors can come and explore the exhibition again and again over the long summer holidays."
The exhibition illustrates the development of personal arms and body armour over the past 2,500 years through film costume, interactive armour and graphic illustration. It highlights warriors that are depicted in popular culture and explains their historical background, equipment, weapons, and philosophies of warfare, drawing on historical and archaeological sources. The interactive elements give a taste of difficulties faced by warriors through time, and how body protection developed with changing military technology.
Highlights among the collection including Galahads hero armour from King Arthur (2004) made by legendary screen armour maker Terry English. The armour worn by Liam McIntyre as Spartacus in the epic Starz television series and a selection of samurai armour from The Last Samurai (2003) made by WETA the production team that created the armour for The Lord of the Rings. There will also be two costumes from the multi Oscar winning Gladiator (2000) which was released 15 years ago this year. To celebrate this anniversary Pop-Up Exhibitions the creators of Way of the Warrior and Worcester City Art Gallery & Museum will be giving away an official steel replica of the famous Spaniard helmet worn by Russell Crowe. The prize competition will be running in the exhibition all summer.
